    Christian Education Philosophy

Church education is "education for creative discipleship in the context of the coming kingdom of God." --James Fowler "Future Christians and Church Education"

The Christian Education Board, ministers, and teachers at La Canada Congregational Church, United Church of Christ seek to provide relevant learning opportunities of nurture and enrichment for individuals of all ages and demographic groups, toward the goal of what is called "creative discipleship" of Jesus Christ. "Creative discipleship" is that service of Jesus Christ, who is the center of our faith and the head of the church universal, which is inspired by our love for God and others, and which is proactive, contemporary, and responsible to our personal, local and world contexts. Although we are decidedly Christian in faith, we value religious, cultural, racial, and economic diversity, and teach the importance of learning from those who are different. We affirm that individuals come to a belief in Jesus Christ by a variety of paths, and also assume that the Christian faith will be lived out in a variety of theological and/or spiritual expressions.

It is the Christian Education Board's philosophy that what may be defined as "Christian education" is limited only by the imagination and desire of the congregation and the Board. Therefore, Christian education at CLW integrates missions and outreach, congregational and community service, visual and performing arts, worship participation, age-appropriate use and study of Christian and Biblical materials, emotional and spiritual care and instruction, discussion, play and recreation, and socialization activities into programs which are enjoyed by various groups separately and together throughout the entire year.
